There are four essential traits for a security guard to be successful: dependability, responsibility, communicability, and adaptability. As important as these traits are, it can be difficult to find all four of these characteristics in one security guard. Here are a few signs to look for that will point you towards a candidate with the right traits.

Dependability is defined as the quality of being trustworthy and reliable. This is the most important quality to have in every profession. Showing up is the first step to being successful; as a bonus, showing up when they say they will be there (even a couple minutes early) is going to show the commitment to the job. Attendance and practicality are essential to being dependable.

Responsibility is the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. Responsibilities fall into the specific job duties, overall performance, and the actions/behaviors in the workplace. This will result in a smooth operation, proper time management, client relationships, and a self-motivated company culture.

Communicability is the ability of sharing or exchanging information, news, or ideas. There is a balance between talking with the clients or civilians and not talking. Clients expect to have an idea of what is going on in their buildings and civilians wish to be heard when there seems to be something wrong. There must be an appropriate amount of internal communication with supervisors and colleagues as well. This will give empowerment, well-informing and makes a more trusting circle between the security guards.

Adaptability: the ability to make (something) suitable for a new use or purpose by modifying themselves and whatever is at hand. Change is difficult to deal with that can be a long process to figure out. Being able to roll with the punches or to go with the flow is challenging to adjust to and still maintain control of the current situation or for other situations that have the potential to arise. This will be one of the company’s biggest assets to have as a security guard or someone who is striving to be a security guard.

These are the traits that will help one become a more successful security guard and the best qualities one can look for when hiring a security guard.
